Native Soil Protection + Cultivation
For millennia, Indigenous Nations around the world have engaged in the practice and the art of nourishing the topsoils around them. Contrary to popular belief, Indigenous People wielded (and continue to wield in many places) immense influence on the world around them. Join us as we explore the poorly understood world that lives beneath our feet and the ways in which Native Nations have cultivated living soils for themselves and future generations. From creative inputs like ash, compost, and used pottery, to the catchment of nutrients flowing down watersheds, to the installation of soil stabilizers like giant cane or switch cane, to creative cropping methods, Indigenous Nations have successfully and intentionally improved soil conditions on vast scales. Together, we will think about these techniques and their underlying ethos of love and care for Mother Earth to see how we can apply these lessons to our world, today.Â
